Five Jailed After Riot At Stinson

Two beach p arties at Stinson Beach Saturday night ended in a riot with five boy s booked at the Marin county jail on charges of dis­ turbing the p eace. Stinson Beach Dep uty Sheriff Bill Woodington said the fight ap p ar­ ently started when one group at­ temp ted to raid the p icnic p rovi­ sions of the other, and fists and beer cans started fly ing. Four girls, from one of the group s dashed to Woodington’s home near the beach and summoned his help at about 9 p .m. Wop dington arrived with five other dep uty sheriffs to find a fight in full swing. They survey ed the fracas and then moved in on the boy s who immediately scattered. Woodington said he and the other dep uties were able to round up all but one or two of the y ouths. As­ sisting were Dep uty Sheriff Glen Wentz, and Sp ecial Dep uties Man­ uel Faustine, Frank Flood, Vern Thomas and Edward Zorn. The nine who were cap tured were taken to the county jail where the four girls were released to their p ar­ ents and the five boy s, all from Mill Valley , were booked on charges of disturbing the p eace. Two were re­ leased after they p osted $100 bail. One of the y ouths is a ward of the Marin juvenile court. Marin County Probation Officer Edmund Blum said that he and others have “made general denials” of the charges against them. Blum said that none of the y ouths attend school.

Marin fire whistles will not join the thousands of other sirens and noise makers throughout thp coun­ try tomorrow when Gen. Douglas MacArthur arrives in San Francisco. Fire sirens throughout the land will herald the ap p roach of the hero of Bataan, but Marin’s fire dep art­ ments will remain silent, according to rep orts received so far. Many firemen feared that any ex tra use of their warning whistles would cause p ublic alarm.

Mery General Store Burglar Attempt Foiled In Inverness

Attemp ted burglary of Mery ’s general store in Inverness was foiled Friday night by owner Lloy d Mery when he scared the intruder away . Mery heard a window broken in the rear of the store and looked out an up stairs window frightening the intruder with a flashlight. He dashed away and Mery could not give p ositive identification. Nothing was taken from the store according to sheriff’s rep orts.

Supervisors To Air Subdivision Problem

Charges that a Novato subdivision is being built on marsh land with-* out adequate earth filling were scheduled for a thorough airing by the board of sup ervisors this after­ noon. The hearing was scheduled after County Engineer Carl Clow inform­ ed the sup ervisors this morning that homes are being erected on land not p rop erly filled. Clow said the county building in­ sp ector has issued building p ermits without insuring that fill require­ ments were comp lied with Following a p rocedure established by the sup ervisors in February , Clow said he insp ected and ap p rov­ ed four building sites. Without waiting for further insp ections or ap p rovals, the building insp ector is­ sued 13 building p ermits. The build­ er, not named in this morning’s dis­ cussions, has begun construction of

more homes without any p ermit at all, Clow added. He said the building insp ector has rep orted violations to the district attorney ’s office, “but they could have been stop p ed by not issuing a p ermit until the filling was ap ­ p roved,” he ex p lained. Clow asked the county to p rovide funds for an insp ector to be em­ p loy ed by his office, if the building insp ection dep artment declines to withhold p ermits until adequate fill­ ing is done. The sup ervisors asked Clow to ap ­ p ear before them again this after­ noon when they hop e to have Build­ ing Insp ector Harry Grieb (Lester Ry an is on vacation), on hand to thresh out the matter. “This is a serious p roblem.'These builders must comp ly with our re­ quirements for p rop er fill on low ground,” declared Sup ervisor Rob­ ert H. Twenty sp elling champ ions from thirteen elementary schools will comp ete in the annual Marin county sp elling bee in the San Rafael High School Little Theater tomorrow night, according to Dr. Wallace Hall, county sup erintendent. F. Ewing Bone, sup ervisor of in­ struction for the San Rafael schools, will be word p ronouneer. Judges will be Mrs. Ada M. Fusselman, secretary of the board of trustees of the College of Marin, and Dr. Wal­ lace Hall, Marin county sup erin­ tendent of schools. Chairman of the Bee is Harold A. MacChesney , of the San Rafael high school staff.

S. R. Officials Take Oaths At 8 Tonight *;/ Several old faces and one new will be on hand tonight at the San Rafael city hall when recently elect­ ed officials take their oaths of of­ fice. The meeting begins at 8 p . m. Ctiy Clerk and Assessor Eugene Smith will take his oath for the thirteenth time. Former Council­ man Ed Culver will be officially named may or, taking the p lace of Robert Austin who could not con­ tinue due to ill health. New face will be that of Dr. Charles W. Aby , who with Homer Wood will be installed as city coun­ cilman. Other officials to be sworn in are City Attorney Harold Haley , Treas- urer-Tax Collector Chris Webb, and City Judge Guy Ciocca. Culver will administer the oath to Smith and he will swear in the other officers. Also to take office will be three incumbent school board officials, Angelo Turrinl, Thomas Boy d and John MacPhail. They will be, p res­ ent at the city hall and will then adjourn to the high school for a re­ organization meeting of the school board. The council agenda following the installation includes City Manager Ray Boege’s rep ort on p ossibility of p arking underneath the Highway 101 sky way . He will read a letter from the division of highway s ex ­ p laining its p olicy .

School contests were conducted under the direction of the p rin­ cip als of the various county schools. Students comp eting were from the six th, seventh, and eighth grades, with all p up ils of those grades try ­ ing for the eliminations. Tomorrow night, fourteen eighth graders will match skill and knowl­ edge against four seventh graders and two six th graders. According to Clarence Herkner, p rincip al of San Rafael’s E* Street school, 430 p up ils p articip ated in the contest at that school. All but six ty were eliminated in written ex ami­ nations. Attending the sp ell-down tomor­ row night will be school p rincip als, teachers, district sup erintendents, p arents and schoolmates. The winner will be declared Marin County sp elling champ ion, and will comp ete in the Western California Sp elling Bee which will be held in San Francisco on Saturday , Ap ril 28, for the state champ ionship , and an all ex p ense p aid trip to Wash­ ington, D.C. where the national fin­ als will be held Friday , May 25. 'No Such License Number/ Says State

San Anselmo p olice today investigated a p ossible kidnap p ing after a scrawled p lea for help was found on the front seat of a p arked car last night in downtown San Anselmo. - The message, written in a juvenile hand on a p iece of card­ board, was found by Mrs. Anthony Mikicich, owner of the Coffee Cup restaurant on Sir Francis Drake boulevard shortly after 9 p . m. The note said: “Help ! Please send p olice or some one after a black Ford—California license No. 8N70551. They have us in the back seat and can’t see me withing this.” Police Chief Don Wood immedi­ ately issued an all-p oints bulletin to stop any car bearing the numbers written in the note, but after wiring Sacramento Wood found there was no such license number on file. Po­ lice officers said that the dep art­ ment of motor vehicles is occasion­ ally behind in its records. Highway p atrolmen were station­ ed at the Golden Gate bridge toll p laza last night, on the lookout for the my sterious black Ford bearing the numbers 8N70551. Wood said today that his men are following up all clues but that there is still no trace of any kidnap ers or victims. Officer Ray Veilati said the writ­ ing in the note seemed to be “juve­ nile” and ap p arently had been writ­ ten with a ball p oint p en. Mrs. Mikicich told p olice that she had p arked her car in front of her cafe in the afternoon and that she had left both front windows op en. When she left the restaurant around 9 p .m. she discovered the S.O.S. and called the San Anselmo p olice sta­ tion.

20.000 Attend Festival At Catholic High

“Festival In Marin” p roved to be a success again this y ear as nearly 20.000 p ersons attended the gaily decorated festival in the gy mnasium of the Marin Catholic high school Saturday and Sunday . Among the f e a t ur e attractions were the ham and turkey dinners. The cafeteria was jammed during the entire four and one half hours both Saturday and Sunday evenings. Father Edward Allen, chairman, and R. A. Butterworth, honorary chairman, ex p ressed their satisfac­ tion with the success of the festival and ex tended their thanks to the p ublic for the resp onse to the cele­ bration. James Deasy , p resident of the Men’s Club, and Mrs. Mary Bater, p resident of the Women’s Aux iliary , were active in the p romotion of the festival. Novato Man Injured In Air Crash

Three members of the Fourth Air Force, stationed at Hamilton Field, have been rescued from the wreck­ age o t A p lane which crashed last night 15 miles south of » Vallejo, of­ ficials at the Air Base have an­ nounced. They are: Pilot Lt. Douglas F. Wigg, 30, of Novato, Lt. Col. Melton J. Smith, 57, San Francisco, and T/Sgt. Earl J. Morrison, 29, Los Angeles. Lt. Wigg was ex amined at Letter- man Hosp ital in San Francisco and dismissed after receiving treatment for minor cuts. He is now at home- with his wife and two children in Novato. Lt. Wigg’s p arents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wigg, are residents of Fairfax . Sergeant Morrison is being treat­ ed at Letterman for a fractured neck, a broken right thigh, and p os­ sibly a broken back. Colonel Smith has been taken to the base hosp ital ^t Travis Air Base for observation of p ossible internal.injuries. The p lane was returning from March Field to Hamilton Air Base when it crashed at ap p rox imately 10:52 p m. The crash was not de­ tected until Sgt. Morrison staggered into a Suisun Hotel at 12:30 a.m. asking for help . A rescue p arty was sent out to bring ip the other two fly ers in the p lane.

Supervisors To Air Subdivision Problem

Charges that a Novato subdivision is being built on marsh land with-* out adequate earth filling were scheduled for a thorough airing by the board of supervisors this after­ noon. The hearing was scheduled after County Engineer Carl Clow inform­ ed the supervisors this morning that homes are being erected on land not properly filled. Clow said the county building in­ spector has issued building permits without insuring that fill require­ ments were complied with Following a procedure established by the supervisors in February, Clow said he inspected and approv­ ed four building sites. Without waiting for further inspections or approvals, the building inspector is­ sued 13 building permits. The build­ er, not named in this morning’s dis- < cussions, has begun construction of

more homes without any permit at all, Clow added. He said the building inspector has reported violations to the district attorney’s office, “but they could have been stopped by not issuing a permit until the filling was ap­ proved,” he explained. Clow asked the county to provide funds for an inspector to be em­ ployed by his office, if the building inspection department declines to withhold permits until adequate fill­ ing is done. The supervisors asked Clow to ap­ pear before them again this after­ noon when they hope to have Build­ ing Inspector Harry Grieb (Lester Ryan is on vacation), on hand to thresh out the matter. “This is a serious prdblem. Several old faces and one new will be on hand tonight at the San Rafael city hall when recently elect­ ed officials take their oaths of of­ fice. The meeting begins at 8 p. m. Ctiy Clerk and Assessor Eugene Smith will take his oath for the thirteenth time. Former Council­ man Ed Culver will be officially named mayor, taking the place of Robert Austin who could not con- tinue due to ill health. New face will be that of Dr. Charles W. Aby, who with Homer Wood will be installed as city coun­ cilman. Other officials to be sworn in are City Attorney Harold Haley, Treas- urer-Tax Collector Chris Webb, and City Judge Guy Ciocca. Culver will administer the oath to Smith and he will swear in the other officers. Also to take office will be three incumbent school board officials, Angelo Turrini, Thomas Boyd and John MacPhaU. They will be, pres­ ent at the city hall and will then adjourn to the high schodl for a re­ organization meeting of the school board. The council agenda following the installation includes City Manager Ray Boege’s report on possibility of parking underneath the Highway 101 skyway. He will read a letter from the division of highways ex­ plaining Its policy.

School contests were conducted under the direction of the prin­ cipals of the various county schools. Students competing were from the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades, with all pupils of those grades try­ ing for the eliminations. Tomorrow night, fourteen eighth graders will match skill and knowl­ edge against four seventh graders and two sixth graders. According to Clarence Herkner, principal of San Rafael’s E Street school, 430 pupils participated in the contest at that school. AH but sixty were eliminated in written exami­ nations. Attending the spell-down tomor­ row night will be school principals, teachers, district superintendents, parents and schoolmates. The winner will be declared Marin County spelling champion, and will compete in the Western California Spelling Bee which will be held in San Francisco on Saturday, April 28, for the state championship, and an all expense paid trip to Wash­ ington, D.C. where the national fin­ als will be held Friday, May 25. In last year’s national finals, Ron­ nie La Velle, a pupil at Alto school, finished fifth among 50 of the na­ tion’s state champions. San Anselmo police today investigated a possible kidnapping after a scrawled plea for help was found on the front seat of a parked car last night in downtown San Anselmo. - The message, written in a juvenile hand on a piece of card­ board, was found by Mrs. Anthony Mikicicb, owner of the Coffee Cup restaurant on Sir Francis Drake boulevard shortly after 9 p. m. The note said: “Help! Please send police or some one after a black Ford—California liceñse No. 8N70551. They have us in the back seat and can’t see me withing this.” Police Chief Don Wood immedi ately issued an all-points bulletin to stop any car bearing the numbers written in the note, but after wiring Sacramento Wood found there was no such license number on file. Po­ lice officers said that the depart­ ment of motor vehicles is occasion­ ally behind in its records. Highway patrolmen were station­ ed at the Golden Gate bridge toU plaza last night, on the lookout for the mysterious black Ford bearing the numbers 8N70551. Wood said today that his men are following up all clues but that there is still no trace of any kidnapers or victims. Officer Ray Vellati said the writ­ ing in the note seemed to be “juve­ nile” and apparently had been writ­ ten with a ball point pen. Mrs. Mikicich told police that she had parked her car in front of her cafe in the afternoon and that she had left both front windows open. When she left the restaurant around 9 p.m. she discovered the S.O.S. and called the San Anselmo police sta­ tion.

Marin Republicans To Spend Day In Capitol Tomorrow Marin Republican central com­ mitteemen are scheduled to leave the Greyhound bus depot In San Rafael at 8 am. tomorrow for a day at the state capítol. Committee Secretary George Mar­ shall said there are still seats avail­ able on the 42-passenger bus. Mar­ shall is in charge of reservations. AH but four or five of the 23 GOP central committeemen have signi­ fied their intention to make the trip, he said. 20,000 Attend Festival At Catholic High “Festival in Marin” proved to be a success again this year as nearly 20,000 persons attended the gaily decorated festival in the gymnasium of the Marin Catholic high school Saturday and Sunday. Among the f e a t u r e attractions were the ham and turkey dinners. The cafeteria was jammed during the entire four and one half hours both Saturday and Sunday evenings.
